The oboe is a double-reed instrument that plays in the soprano range. They are most commonly made from wood, but student models can be made from resin as well. As opposed to the quite similar-looking clarinet it has a conical bore and the sound is produced through a double bamboo reed instead of a mouthpiece.  Because of its distinctive, bright sound and rich timbre, it is often used as a solo instrument in orchestral works.
