Alto
The alto recorder lies between the soprano and the tenor in both size and pitch. It is tuned in F, a fifth below the soprano and a fourth above the tenor. The alto has a lovely, pleasant tone, that is a bit softer and darker than the soprano. If you are an adult beginner, you can start on the alto just as well as the soprano. The reason most children start with the soprano is that the fingering is easier to grasp for smaller hands.
